Shelton was among the very first to befriend me when we moved to Garrard County in 1977. He was quick to make me and my family feel welcome in the community. Not surprisingly, I learned over the years that he treated everyone equally and with that same level of respect. He was a gentleman on every situation. We have lost one Great American!

He was a kind man, treated everyone the same, a man of integrity, an icon of Garrard Co. His physical presence will be missed but he wont be forgotten. You have my sympathy in your great loss.

  • Vanessa Ruda Posted November 16, 2018 4:23 pm

Shelton was modest and kind gentleman. His warm greetings and candy treats were a fine welcome to all who entered into Lancaster Christian Church for decades upon decades. My younger son and I attended a funeral service at a different church one time. He seemed to be looking for someone, so I asked him about it. He whispered, “Where’s the candy man?” His innocence brought such a smile to my face. For my son, and likely for so many others at Lancaster Christian Church, our “candy man” was a formal role that Shelton embraced with genuine purpose and accepting kindness. A must-have essential position for every church. My son is right, in a sense. Every church needs a candy man, but more importantly every church needs a Shelton. We grieve the loss of ours. Rest in peace, dear friend. Your sweetness will always be remembered and missed.

  • Mike Gay Posted November 16, 2018 6:24 pm

I grew up in the Lancaster Christian Church. Shelton was an honorable leader both in and out of those 4 walls. My mom worked for him in the courthouse for many years. He was a key member in helping the rise of the JC Ballpark. The Country Dinner for many years was the best food in town. It is not an accident that most all of his endeavors found success. It is hard not to succeed when you do it the right way like he did.
The Lord gets another faithful servant to come home.

  • Bill and Susan Ledford Posted November 17, 2018 7:36 pm

Every time I go by the Country Diner I think of Shelton and then I go by the JC Ballpark and I get a warm feeling once again. Love and prayers to the family
